The Universe Within Is A World-building Course That Sparks The Natural Creative Genius In All of Us!
In this first module, called Corrugated Headgear, students in grades 3-6 play the part of world-builders and learn from the things they make. As creators and superheroes, they construct tools and magical, functional headdress to help them tackle major environmental or social issues in their own worlds. They also use their superpowers to solve problems, which are based on their real life strengths and also the basic sciences.
In Corrugated headgear, they learn how to engineer strong structures using cardboard and attachment mechanisms. they capture all their ideas and solutions in a personal notebook called The Daily Doodle. Each lesson begins with a 3-minute opening video that includes inspiration from the magical world of Beveldom, instructions from an animated character of University of Arizona Math Professor Dr. Bayly and tips and demonstrations by five elementary students. The course culminates in a Pedestrian Carnival, a casual parade, in which they wear their costumes and demonstrate how what they’ve made helps them solve the problem.
The Universe Within is a great way for students to learn Science, Math, Engineering in a hands-on highly engaging way using Visual Arts, Theater Arts and English Language Arts, and a fantastic way for student to learn how to generate original content for digital storytelling!
