Create 2D Shapes

Time: 60 minutes

Materials: Lesson 4 video; One recycled box for each student and three “cardboard dumpsters” with recycled cardboard strips plus glue and masking tape; markers; 2D geometric shapes handout; The Daily Doodle digital notebooks.

Overview: Students explore the world of two dimensional geometry by making a kit of cardboard shapes.

As they get ready to make shapes, they’re reminded: A point has no dimension. It’s just a location. A line has one dimension of length. And a plane has two dimensions of length and width.

After they make cardboard shapes, they draw them in their notebooks, so they can see how points and lines connect to make shapes on a single flat plane. These shapes with straight lines form angles between two lines and a point. The arc of an angle is measured in degrees. They review various types of angles.

In The Universe Within, students construct and learn about shapes. They work with materials to close the line segments, extending the cardboard beyond the point and gluing it. They add tape to hold the cardboard in place until the glue dries. Then they count the number of lines, points and angles on their 2D shapes, and, find as many types of angles as they can.
