Lesson 19: Get Into Character
Time: 60 minutes
Materials: Lesson 19 video; Costumes including clothing, shoes and headdresses; index cards with poems; The Daily Doodle notebooks.
Overview: Students put on their characters’ headdresses and see things in a whole new light.
As they rehearse with the functional costumes they’ve made, they prepare for The Pedestrian Carnival, which is a casual parade where they’ll get to share their work with others.
They’re reminded that at the point they start to believe something special could actually happen, there’s often a critical voice whispering: Who do you think you are? What will others think? What if you fail? They move beyond the negative voice and call on the inner superhero to gain strength.
They role play with each other, practicing using their characters’ voices, expressions and movements as they read their poems and demonstrate how their costumes work.
