Lesson 13: Make Patterns With Words
Time: 60 minutes
Materials: Lesson 13 video; The Daily Doodle digital notebook.
Overview: Students write a poem about their character using the power of patterns.
They’re reminded that a pattern is a series of elements, in which the same elements—repeat at regular intervals. They learn about three different types of poems. The Diamante poem with seven lines and a growing number of different types of words at the center; The Japanese Haiku poem composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables; and the Rhyming poem with two consecutive lines or every other lines whose last word rhymes.
Using an Idea Web, students explore aspects of their character that they might want to write about: problem and solutions, their superpowers, their basic science, a line or phrase in their poem they want to emphasize and/or the type of superhero their characters portray. After choosing one of the three poetry formats, they write a poem using word patterns.
