Lesson 9: Circle Round Your Head
Time: 60 minutes
Materials: Lesson 9 video; Cardboard kits; The Daily Doodle notebook and pen, pencil or marker.
Overview: Students learn about circumference by measuring the distance around their heads to create a headband for their headdresses.
Students learn that circumference, also known as perimeter, is used to measure the distance around only curved figures.
In The Universe Within they use tools to find circumference: diameter, radius and pi. They learn that pi is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of that circle. Regardless of the circle’s size, this ratio will always equal pi: 3.14159265358979….
They make a circle headband from a long cardboard strip that fits snuggly on their heads. They measure and record the circumference, diameter and radius of their headbands. They calculate the circumference of their headbands using two formulas for pi.
