Lesson 8: Draw Your Portrait
Time: 60 minutes
Materials: Lesson 8 video; one 8.5 x 11 blank piece of paper; The Daily Doodle notebook and pen, pencil or marker.
Overview: Students try something totally new and draw themselves with their eyes closed.
As they draw themselves with eyes closed, they perceive themselves in a new way. They feel and draw the lines and angles of their bodies to create a unique self-portrait. As they get ready to draw, they’re asked to use internal awareness to notice if there are parts of the body that stand out. If so, they’re encouraged to take time to add detail to that area of the drawing.
In The Universe Within, students focus on inner perceptions, rather than what the logical brain tells them something “should” look like. With eyes tightly shut, they use their hands to feel the head, face and every part of the body. Students draw their entire bodies starting at the bottom of the feet and finishing at the top of the head.
Once their portraits are completed, students see if any physical features they drew could be linked to the Superpowers they previously selected.
